Making old-fashioned popcorn is easier than you think. Dressing up the freshly popped kernels to a savory or sweet treat is the fun part. Of course, you can enjoy it freshly popped and bare. Chocolaty salted caramel popcorn is delicious.
I grew up eating stovetop popped popcorn. Nowadays, I do the same for my girls. Whether it’s a weekend family movie night, an on-the-go snack, or a fancy party treat, homemade snacks are always a winner.
Sweet? or Salty? I like to have a bowl of sweet and one of savory for a nice balance. Savory popcorn is pretty straightforward and quick. One of my favorites is adding Old Bay Seasoning or any cajun seasoning.
Chocolate Salted Caramel Popcorn is lightly sweet with a salty finish. Use our salted caramel sauce recipe and your favorite chocolate, and you will have a bowl of pure joy. This is a homemade party pleaser and can be made a day ahead.
The key to success is making sure the oil temperature is just right. Testing three popcorn kernels is the best way to do this. Two or three tries should do the trick.
Ingredients
3 tablespoons coconut oil
1 cup popcorn kernels
1/2 cup salted caramel (see our recipe)
1/3 cup chocolate chips for melting (your choice of dark or semi-sweet)
kosher salt flakes (optional)
Instructions
Popcorn
- Add oil to a dutch oven over medium-high heat
- Test 3 kernels first in the oil cover. When you hear the kernels pop, carefully remove the popped corn. If the kernels burn, adjust the heat and test again.
- Add 1 cup of kernels to the oil, cover, and shake periodically to prevent burning.
- Reduce heat to medium-low when the kernels pop rapidly
- Remove from heat when popping slows to 2-3 seconds between pops
Adding Toppings
- Preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
- In a large mixing bowl, add popcorn and a 1/2 cup of salted caramel sauce. Mix until well combined.
- Spread on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet—Bake for 30 minutes.
- Add 1/3 cup of chocolate chips to a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 10-second increments and stir until smooth.
- Remove popcorn from the oven. Cool for 10 minutes and drizzle with chocolate. Lightly sprinkle with salt flakes (optional).
- Once the chocolate sets, store it in an airtight container.
Notes
You may use store-bought salted caramel. Ingredients vary, so watch the popcorn baking time.
