Chocolate Covered Bananas

Healthy two-ingredient chocolate dessert covered in your choice of toppings.

Chocolate is one of the most desired dessert ingredients. With so many varieties, it is a treat all on its own. Chocolate-covered frozen bananas are a fantastic DIY after-dinner dessert – allowing everyone to add their favorite toppings.

Two Ingredients

Chocolate-covered bananas are super easy to make. They only require bananas and your favorite chocolate. Dark chocolate between 72% and 85% is a personal preference, but semi-sweet and milk chocolate may also be used. Whichever you choose, make sure it is high-quality.

Tips

Bananas – Choose firm bananas. Over ripened bananas will be too soft. Insert popsicle sticks before freezing the bananas. Freeze them for at least two hours.

Chocolate – Use your preferred variety. Just make sure it is good quality chocolate. I do not suggest using the chips you find in craft shops. Those are great for decorating, but the flavor is lacking. I use Trader Joe’s 72% Dark Chocolate. It’s vegan, gluten and dairy-free and has the perfect hint of vanilla. I also love the silky texture once melted, and it’s not bitter. If you prefer sweet chocolate, Trader Joe’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate might be the one. There are many varieties and brands available. A good rule of thumb is to choose the one you enjoy on its own. Melting: In a dry microwave-safe dish, add chocolate and microwave for 30 seconds, remove and stir. Return chocolate to the microwave and repeat in 10-second intervals until the chocolate is melted through.

Toppings – The choices are endless. Chop and prep all toppings before dipping the bananas in chocolate. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Dried Fruit: raspberry, strawberry, blueberry
  • Coconut
  • Nuts: peanuts, pistachios, pecans, walnuts, etc.
  • Seeds: pumpkin, sunflower, etc.
  • Pretzels
  • Cacao nibs
  • Nut or seed butter
  • Sprinkles (my six-year-old insisted on this one)
  • Graham cracker crumbs (great with dried strawberries)
