Summer is just around the corner. Are you scrambling to put together a plan? A summer plan should include books to read, new things to explore, and a summer reading list that includes adventure, fun facts, and topics to spark conversation.
Exposing children to books with characters of diverse backgrounds strengthens their respect for people of other ethnic and racial groups and encourages minority children to embrace their own. Kids learn about the world around them from books. Selections should reflect the experiences of all children as well as feature children of color in magical kingdoms and superhero adventures.
According to a study on diversity in youth literature, “engaging narratives that reflect the heterogeneity of youth of color and their varied experiences across cultural and geographical contexts provides a basis for resisting and refuting dominant narratives.”
This summer reading list embraces stories of characters with diverse backgrounds. Happy Reading!
